I would suggest when the domain is almost expired, transfer it to another registrar, as I heard GoDaddy is no good (I heard about lot of scams and weird rules, and the fact that you can buy already registered domains registered with them if you pay more than the current owner)

yes, but with transfers an extra year is added. And most registrars has the same transfer fee as renewal fee
