The idea is really cool but the layout ... wait what layout? :dunno:

I always like to suggest people like you (who are not web designers) to use templates. I even made thread about some good templates here. Take a look at it http://forums.x10hosting.com/graphics-webdesign/96076-some-nice-free-templates-my-pick.html

I really don't like to see great ideas fail because of bad design or bad realization.
