GZIP compression on xo2

Hi there! I have a website on xo2 and I'm having trouble enabling GZIP compression. I can't seem to do it with any of the normal .htaccess methods, and I've tried both mod_deflate and mod_gzip.
However, using

<? ob_start("ob_gzhandler"); ?>

at the top of my PHP pages seems to work.
What's up?

Here's my .htaccess:

mod_gzip_item_include file \
    \.(?:html|css|js)$
mod_gzip_item_exclude file \
    \.(?:exe|t?gz|zip|bz2|sit|rar)$

gzip compression is a server-side setting with litespeed, and it's currently disabled on xo2/3 due to some issues with litespeed. I will re-enable it today.

OK, thanks very much. I've done some PHP wizardry to optimise my page and I get 99/100 on Google PageSpeed Insights. Next up: Minify HTML!
