For commercial use I like IPB the most as it takes lower memory than vB and loads faster. For free forum I like SMF as its easiest to patch and upgrade so no security holes easiest to operat for beginner although not many skins available as vB or IPB.

Yes, vB is more powerful out of the box, but with alot of upgrades it will match vB in a way (well, not all the way).

Vbulletin or the way.
And why:
Vbulletin is more secure then IPB but IPB have more mod then Vbulletin but vb is the best because ore the great secure.

Because it is open source, and has a LOT of mods with his own auto-setup panel... and in addition is very secure ;D

well its like this

VBulletin - For use by business such as X10Hosting. Looks professional and looks good as well.

IPB - For Professional web designers.

phpBB forums (myBB, punBB) - For fun free, beginner use. Also for use by professionals but tend to be good for the beginners.

i agree with Zenax about his opinion but i really like IPB

For Not Paying:
phpBB i believe. has more features than most other free forums but in another thing XMB also has quite a few good features.

For Paying:
I would have to say VBulletin cause there are tons more add-ons and whatnot

For a licensed/paid forum engine type, I vote for VB.
But for the free one, phpBB & SMF is the most used forum system everywhere, so I chose that ^^

I have tried IPB, SMF, and phpBB 3.0 and so far I find it like this:

IPB - Great mods and customisation but require knowledge on modifying the templates manually.

SMF - So far it's the easiest to use of all three forum software. I was pleasantly surprised to find the built-in package manager working so well. Makes installing mods a cinch. <-- My vote (Other)

phpBB 3.0 - Extensive features and customisation available. A bit complex admin CP, requires time to learn how to navigate it but overall one of the best free forum software. Not many mods/skins available because it still isn't a stable release.
