Well I have tried all 3.

-Vbulletin, its ok but you have to pay for any "decent skins" and they charge a arm and a leg for a decent portal system.

-IPB...well I started to use it but is a total PAIN IN THE A$$ when it comes to installing mods! Half of the mods wont work together! I had to redo my board 3 times because of trying yo have a store mod and a chat mod at the same time which basically wont work...plus it would mess up the db when u tried to unistall one of them. I finally gave up on it!

SO now im back to smf....simple to use...lots of features and the store mod, as well as others are totally simple to install

I would have to lean toward VB because of the security. And VB is pretty much the most supported BB when it comes to mods and skins. Support is a big issue for me. At this point I don't see why I should experiment with SMF. Is SMF based of YaBB?

Simple Machines Forum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SMF was created to replace the forum software YaBB SE, which at the time was gaining a bad reputation because of problems with its Perl-based equivalent and similarly named software YaBB. YaBB was known to cause resource allocation problems and was resource heavy on many systems, in its earlier versions. YaBB SE was written as a rough PHP port of YaBB, but tended to have many of the same resource and even security problems since it was a port of the insecure Perl version. Joseph Fung and Jeff Lewis of Lewis Media, the owners of YaBB SE and the original owners of SMF, made the decision to convert to a new brand and name to give the project the fresh start the developers and community deserved.

i would prefer phpBB. more customizable. currently waiting for phpbb3 to be released officially. vB is too ex for me :D however i would prefer IPB to vB. ok, there is abit of bias-ness here cos i used IPB frequently. IPB admin panel is very good. :D

My vote goes for vBulletin, probably because I'm an active 'hacker' there :D

Personally I like SMF and IPB, however SMF takes years to load but on the other hand IPB is very fast.

If you have a large scale forum I'd go with IPB, just more featured and professional, if you need a forum fast go with SMF.

I'm currently working with IPB, but takes ages to build the forums up.

V-Bulletin has to be the best forum software I ever used and loved. This is because it has room for a lot of improvement like addons, plugins, and MODS too but the best thing is the WYSIWYG or what ever its called post editor. Yet the feature I love of all V-Bulletin boards are that they have a center button
