You can create an ftp account (done in cPanel) for your friend, granting him access only to the folder that contain your forum files. Either a permanent account or one that you later remove. That way he does not access your full cPanel and you don't have to give out your login details for the cPanel hence you manage to stay within the rules and still achieve what you want to. Though in this case to edit a file he'd have to download it and edit and then re-upload.

Another option would be, if he lives nearby, that you together do the work, that way he can easily help you and you do the actual logging into cPanel part of the job.
