This will be a tutorial on how to use the software Hamachi.

For those of you who do not know what hamachi is, then I shall give a brief explanation. It is a piece of software from the LogMeIn group, that creates a VPN. It is very useful indeed for playing games against your friends.

The first thing that you have to do is to download the software from the website:

https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp?lang=en

The next thing to do is obviously to install the software. When you are going through the installation, make sure that you set it up to use a non-commercial licence. This will enable you to use the program freely, without any activation.

Once installad, you basically have to follow the tips that appear next to it.

Note: If you are having problems with this program, then one of the things that I fount useful, was making sure that it has been added to the allowed programs list in your firewall. Me personally, using the windows firewall, I noticed that it had not even been added to the list, let alone allowed on it.

This piece of software will start automatically when windows starts. In the preferences, there is no where to stop it from launching at windows start. I think that the only way to disable it, would be to change it in the msconfig. For those of you who do not know how to edit msconfig, then look it up on Microsofts website.

Another useful thing is that it runs alongside your other network connections, which can be useful. When you have finished installaing the program, (in vista) the network dialogue box will appear, asking you what type of network this is going to be. I set it up to be a home network, as it is obiviously going to be used between houses.

I will be adding pictures to this tutorial version on my blog, which be published soon! I shall edit this post with a link to it on my blog!

For those who don't know, a VPN is a Virtual Private Network. What it does is allow multiple computers that are only connected together via the Internet to create their own network of computers to create a Virtual LAN (Local Area Network). This program is very useful for clan/guild gaming.

This tutorial could use some work but LogMeIn is a simple program and this surely covers the basics.

Ooops, guess I forgot to mention that. This tutorial was only intended to highlight the basics of the program. There are other options within the the program in order to tweak it to your liking.

Thanks for the added info VPmase!

so if my school blocks direct access to IP adresses and ports, like if I type in any IP, example 127.0.0.1 or a port like stoli.x10hosting.com:2082 I get a "cannot connect" error. So if I use this on my home network, and install it on my school computer, if I connect to my home computer, will I be able to evade the block?
