It turns out Netscape is over for good. Which is very said.
It shocks me because they just released Netscape Navigator 9 which is basically firefox with a netscape skin and some default/built in extensions, but it really does run very smoothly and much faster than firefox in my opinion.

I went ahead and downloaded it tonight, and while i was looking for skins i saw this: Quote: End of Support for Netscape web browsers
and it was posted on "December 28th 2007", which is almost a month ago.

I wonder why i haven't heard anything about this until now? It's crazy. You can read the entire announcement here: http://blog.netscape.com/2007/.....-browsers/

The reaosn this kinda makes me sad is that Netscape was the first browser I had ever used back in the 90's when i first got online. All my early computer memories had it in it. I even tried to cling to it until 2003, but that's after AOL bought It and basically ruined it as they did with ICQ after the bought it. So i quit using it then, but i always checked out each version they came out with in hopes that it'd be nice and worth using, but hasn't ever been since AOL gobbled it up.

Now they are just letting it go. I guess to die and disappear for good. I wish some how they'd just give it to the Mozilla foundation and mozilla could bring it back, but i doubt they'll ever do that since AOL paid like 10billion USD on it. At least then though the name would live on, and get back to where it started, etc.

I really was shocked by reading this. Even though i haven't really touched the browser in years, i was hoping that i'd be able to again someday, or maybe i'm just sad because those old memories are just memories now, i'm unsure, ha its just sad (sorry half asleep, almost 3am).

Anyways did any one else already hear about this? I know some of you are young and stuff and might not have very many memories with Netscape, but there are also some older people here who probably only used it back in the day.

I keep hoping some how ICQ gets brought back, but i think AOL is intentionally bringing that program down also. Actually i think it is already gone.

Gee. That's too bad. Though I've very rarely used Netscape, it really is a shame that it had to go this way. It was one of those antique browsers that was really good at what it did.

I well remember the browser wars!. They were a real pain in the ass, if you were trying to build sites that worked on Netscape (which was very bad) and InternetExplorer (which was much worse). In the mid-90's, Netscape was basically in the position that Google's in now: the chief challenge to MicroSoft's dominance of, well, everything (that didn't derive from UNIX). I'm no fan of Google, but I hope things turn out differantly this time around.

It was one of the finest browsers of all times, thought had to face a stiff competitions from other browsers.

Too bad, Netscape was unique and had many accomplishments like the creation of JavaScript. It was really the best browser and the first of it's kind, I wonder why it had to die. Also, I think that Microsoft has better things to worry about like Mozilla Firefox dominating Internet Explorer 7.

I'm not a fan of Netscape but it's sad to see them go. I like Firefox and Opera more.

I remember Netscape very vaguely - It was a good browser though.
I'd be even more sad if Mozilla turned around and dumped Firefox though....

When they came out with Netscape 9, they dropped the way Netcsape 8 handled Autofill. The Autofill manager allows you to edit individual "passcards" that store login and password info. I really liked the features associated with autofill.
To this day I still use Netscape 8 more than any other browser. I suspect I'm missing some other features but I have tabbing and I don't run into as many printing problems that I've seen in IE.
