bascially you are going to plug the router into the wall (power)

then hook the internet to the router and hard wire into it. Frrom there you will be about to go to 192.168.1.1 and try admin | admin (check your book for the exact username and pass). Then when you get inside look around and there should be some information on your wireless settings. Set some settings and then try connecting with a laptop or wireless desktop

If you have XP it should be "plug in and play" which mine was.. And then if you want to set up some security on it, it's not hard you can download the guid off the internet for any router.. But yea mine is a wireless and I just pluged it in and it worked!

I've never had to open a port unless I was hosting a server for a game, or like TS somthing like that.

You hook the router up to your modem.. and hook your PC thats beside the router up with a cable.. But for your PC up stairs if you want it to be wireless you have to install a wireless card on your up stairs PC to pick up the signal.

Well first make sure everything is pluged in for sure.. Next it's not just going to pick up the signal the first time. You need to make sure the wireless card is installed.. Next go to your connections and go to wireless double click that should pop up click refresh network list then it should pick that up then double click on that signal and it should connect.
