SSH not enabled on free host site

I wanted to set up a password protected area on my site. i expected to use ssh to create the .htpassword file on the home directory. however ssh is not enabled. is it possible to get ssh access?

SSH is not available on free hosting accounts. You can set up htpasswd by either uploading the files manually via cpanel file manager/ftp or by using the cpanel password protect directories icon
