I tried searching, but found nothing more recent than 2009. I wanted to know if there were any ways to set up an SVN server using my existing web space for projects (I'd rather not have to use a third party "free" host, since most do not meet my needs).

I've seen really old posts of that being impossible here, but it's been a while and I wonder if it still is or if the development team has looked into this, like possibly managing it through cPanel or similar.

I'd assume you'd need a vps for that, our free hosting is not designed for that.

What is VPS exactly? Because I know I am set up with a premium account, I just didn't see anywhere else to post for general help except here in the Free Hosting area.

Premium hosting does have its own ticket system through the clients area, which most often is faster to get replies about premium services.

VPS is a virtual private server (you'd need some linux knowledge for a VPS, they come unmanaged), you can read more and check the pricing at http://x10vps.com
I just confirmed with Corey as well that you'd need a VPS for that.
