I don't use windows, so I don't encounter much non-free software. That being said, I'm not afraid to pay for it if I think it would be worth it. Most of the time, it's not worth it. I also own a jailbroken iPhone (so I don't have to have a data plan, I run it off wireless networks) and I've only bought one app from the app store, which was a white noise generator that I liked the free version of enough to promote it's development.
I would rather donate to software organizations I like than purchase their software. It's like buying something, and if you don't like it you return it, but if you do like it you pay for it. I especially like how drupal handles bugs. If you want a bug fix, you can add a bounty to your bug report and the person who completes the bug fix will earn the bounty.
