I try to be professional and give them names that describe what they are. Here are some from my home network:

  • John-pc
  • mom-laptop
  • Julianna-laptop
  • Ubuntu-VM
  • CWii-server
So what do you name yours?

Gaming Machine: Fraginator-smith
Old gaming machine: Pwninator-smith
AMD K6 Machine: Molassis-smith
Linux Router/server: net-smith
Laptop: lappy-smith
2nd laptop: D42G5R21-smith
iPod Touch: iPod-smith
PSP: N/A
PS2: N/A

Taken straight from the router. The router name is what I named it and shows up as in Windows. It doesn't show itself in the DHCP pool obviously :p. These are the machines that have been on in the last 36 hours.

When talking about them I describe them by their "job" (like main PC or spare PC/laptop etc). On the network, they have my name and their OS, and "job" if necessary (virtual PCs have a V in there as well).

Like:
AlexXPPC, or
Alex98VPC

My main one is different - VistaPCAlex

mine are very basic, but they server thier purpose well. the one i'm using now is named after the case i use: "NZXT" since it's a custom build. the rest of the packaged computers are named after their manufacturers: emachine, vaio, compaq. then the special purpose computers are named after their purpose: server, backup.

see, very basic but serve their purpose :p

I would definitely use professional names if I had a network of computers at my disposal, but since I have only 2 I use my nicknames. First one was a cheap as dirt emachine called Twinkie, and my current overpriced but decent gateway is called Waffle, which was my nickname since middle school cause of my last name.

Mine actually worked out in weird ways. I have PC-Unix, and Mac machines in the house... All of my PC's are named after Norse Gods, and the Mac (PPC or Intel) are all named after Egyptian Gods.

Server - Loki
Unix Desktop - Thor
Unix Laptop - Hermod
Mac Laptop - Isis
Mac G5 - Osiris
iMac Intel - Horus
