Hello, dear members of x10h.com !

today my account here was registrated. A warm hello to everybody. Hope it was the right decision to come here. I have seen many postings about Wiki, that's great to know so many wiki friends here.
I surfed around in the forum (even used the search function) but yet didn't find the answers I am looking for. So be patient with a newbee in this big forum. My questions are hopefully in the right place here and now.

I intend to install a wiki, based on the MediaWiki many of you will know from Wikipedia. I intend to use the stable version 1.11 instead of 1.12.

To avoid mistakes I just want set here some questions. With FTP I am confidenced. A user in the MySQL of x10hosting.com already is installed, I conneted it with a backup system, called MDumper, excellent tool. You can make quick daily backups hereby and let send them via eMail zipped to your private account. Safteness first.
MDumper recognized the dBase of x10h.com automatically so from that side I have a good feeling. I already have the db_name, host address etc. in mind (and on paper).

Now the questions with installing a Mediawiki. Via FTP I see that there exist two directories
http://myname.x10hosting.com/public_html/...
and
http://myname.x10hosting.com/www/...

As you know the Mediawiki shall be unzipped into a .../wiki/... or a .../w/... directory. Which path I shall take to put the extracted files ?? - The /public_html/... or the /www/... ?? - And shall I use herefore simply a FTP Client I use FTP Commander and WS_FTP.
(XEMAS already sent me a PM today, many thank's for the quick response. He told me about the "cPanel File Manager". Is this better to use. As said, I am confidenced with FTP.)

Another question is the ...wiki/images/... subdirectory and it's own sub-directory .../images/deleted/...
You have to set the read/write modus (via FTP / Unix modus) onto images directory I know. Within the deleted directory is an .htaccess file. At all there are 7 .htaccess files in the MediaWiki (set with "Deny to all") delivered. Will it give a 500-Server error problem at x10h.com by image upload ?? - Or won't make the integrated .thaccess files any problems ?? (Same question for data import function.)

Now about the LocalSettings.php after the dBase connection via config directory (I think this will not be handicaped). - I want restrict user groups. It means normal writers as users, and sysops (admins) + 1 bureoaucrat with the highest level of rights. I know the php codes. Any experiences (and traps) herewith ?? - My question tends into that direction that many of the web hosters have a heavy restriction on their Apache Servers, which brings a conflict with the .htaccess. Also eMail authorisized registration I'd like to have... Any problems with this ??

Later I'd like re-write to protect the image directory and the Short URL, the code is to be written into an .htaccess I found in the Manuals at Mediawiki.org (Yes, MediaWiki seems a lot of manual adaption work):
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Short_URL
and for Version 1.11: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Short_URL/Page_title_--_Working_method_with_mediawiki-1.11

Any problems with ????

(Anyhow visit there the site, for 1.9, 1.10 and 1.11 on 23rd Jan they posted there a new security update.
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/mediawiki-announce/2008-January/000068.html )

And last the TLD I'd like to route from my provider onto the new wiki-domain. Does it work a ChName (Change Name) with x10hosting.com. I mean "nice URLs" with own domain.
From
http://wikimyname.x10hosting.com/wiki/index.php?/Main_Page
to
e.g. http://www.wikimyname.net/wiki/Main_Page

And will change the TLD in the browser URL address window if I click through the sites or will stay it fixed the user has orientation problems and can't bookmark the site he or she just visits ???

That's it for the beginning. Meanwhile I will upgrade from basic level 1 to level 2 because MediaWiki needs eMailing function. Hope it won't take too much time to be resetted. As I read regularly 24 hours. Would be nice to get it quicker I can start installing and maintaining on Friday.

For all here who take the time to read this long posting, already now my deep thank's.

See you... Greetings from Europe/Germany/Hamburg - Eljay.

It doesen't matter in which of the public_html or www folder you upload it to. I recommend you to do this (this is what I did):

1. Do a zip of the folder with the wiki files. Before you do this you should re name the folder to example wiki, or the archive to wiki.

2. Upload it to either www or public_html

3. Go to your cPanel and press file manager

4. Find your way to the zip and extract it by pressing extract.

5. Browse to the wiki folder.

6. It will start the install procces. If it doesen't you may need to surf to wiki/install

7. Fill in the information it wants.

And last the TLD I'd like to route from my provider onto the new wiki-domain. Does it work a ChName (Change Name) with x10hosting.com. I mean "nice URLs" with own domain.

The domain is ok to change. I don't gonna write about every step because I just gonna mess it up somewhere. To make the URLs nicer I prefer mod_rewrite (which I don't know how to use).

The Image folder you need to chmod to 777 throught the cPanel filemanager (highlite the folder and press change permissions)
