Bozon's Most Anticipated Games of 2007
10) SSX Blur
Genre: Sports
Developer: EA Montreal
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Why?: I've been a fan of SSX since it first landed on PS2, and now that it's on the way to Wii I couldn't be happier. For whatever reason, the concept of Tony Hawk on Wii just didn't click for me, and while Downhill Jam was still a fun take on the franchise it just didn't feel… right. As for SSX, I feel like it has a solid chance at being a different - yet still very entertaining - Wii interpretation of the original games. It uses both controllers, has a unique way of using not just tilt, but also actual motion recognition, and looks to be a simple, stylized iteration of an awesome franchise. It just works.
9) Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07
Genre: Sports
Developer: EA Redwood Shores
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Why?: If you want to nitpick about graphics you've got the wrong system, plain and simple. While I sat at my desk reading complaint after complaint on various net message boards after we posted our first vids of Tiger I was simultaniously treated to members of our IGN LA Entertainment team as they watched the same trailer on Matt's machine, and from the sound of it Tiger is already selling systems. People that normally walk by without as much as a turn of the head were stopped dead in their tracks, and as Nintendo loyalists complained about visuals new gamers were commenting that "This is something I'd buy a Wii for." Madden convinced me that EA was a solid fit for Wii, and this is simply the next step.
8) No More Heroes
Genre: Action
Developer: Grasshopper
Publisher: Marvelous Interactive/Spike
Why?: No More Heroes almost didn't make my list simply because of the lack of info we've had on the game. That being said, the game is just too impressive to set aside, as I know hours upon hours of my time (and Matt's) will be put towards it over the next year. Its style is amazing, the combat seems to make use of the Wii-mote in an intense - yet intuitive - way, and it's hard not to get excited for Suda 51's next cult classic. Killer 7 may not have been a huge hit, but to tell you the truth I really don't care if No More Heroes sells only one copy this year. It'll be mine, and that's all that matters.
7) Mario Strikers Charged
Genre: Sports
Developer: Next Level Games
Publisher: Nintendo
Why?: Back when Casamassina reviewed the original Strikers for GameCube I was at the beginning of my IGN career, so while I thought the man was crazy for not giving the game an 11 out of 10 (what can I say… I loves me Strikers), I kept my trap shut. Not this time. Mario Strikers Charged looks to be a blatant "Wii-make" kind of game, as the visuals are only slightly enhanced and aside from some online play and basic IR usage it's the same game, but it's still going to be a ton of fun. If Nintendo simply adds a few new modes, new characters, and some new gameplay elements I'm down with another stint of Strikers.
6) Fire Emblem
Genre: Strategy
Developer: Intelligent Systems
Publisher: Nintendo
Why?: I'm a huge fan of both Fire Emblem and Advance Wars. In fact, when Battalion Wars first released I wasn't sure if I wanted to check it out, as part of me was pissed that it was an action game and not a strategy title like its 2D predecessor. Obviously I loves me some BW now, but I still have a special spot in my heart for straight-up strategy games, and that spot will be nicely filled by Fire Emblem this year. It rocked on GameCube, and it looks to rock just as much (if not more) on Wii. A warning though; if Intelligent Systems doesn't add IR cursor support to the game, I will snap my copy of Fire Emblem in half and use it as a weapon while I hunt down the team members individually. D-pad cursor movement; hah! What do I look like, a guy who didn't buy Wii? Don't try it guys… I'm seriously crazy.
5) Battalion Wars II
Genre: Shooter
Developer: Kuju Entertainment
Publisher: Nintendo
Why?: Just when the hate mail was on the way for my Battalion Wars comment, here it is one slot above Fire Emblem. Yup, this game is going to kick new and unique bunches of ass, and I'll be online battling each and every one of you when it does. Battalion Wars is an amazing game, and the addition of online, co-op, IR cursor control, and naval units is going to ensure that nobody gets a review of "Over the Hedge 3: The Return of Whatever" this year. No more crap reviews for me… I'm calling in sick every day from BWII's release until the end of the year, and I'd like to see anyone out there try and stop me. This is going to be a sweet year, yes sir.
4) Sonic and the Secret Rings
Genre: Platformer
Developer: SEGA
Publisher: SEGA
Why?: To be fair, I never thought in a million years that a Sonic game would sit on any top 10 list, much less as my first non-first party game. Still, the playthrough at E3 has me convinced that Sonic and the Secret Rings is the only 3D Sonic game. I've heard all the complaints (specifically from other IGN editors) about it being "on rails" and whatnot, but to be fair every sonic has been on rails, now you just have a better line of vision for jumps and attacks. As long as SEGA delivers on the demo I played, Sonic will rock.
3) Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Genre: Fighting
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Why?: I'm really not sure what goes in this box. Is my job seriously supposed to be convincing Nintendo readers that Smash Bros. is cool? Ok… Link/Samus/Mario/Pit in a battle royal. Oh, and add in online play. There, I'm done. Enough said.
2) Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Genre: First-Person Adventure
Developer: Retro Studios
Publisher: Nintendo
Why?: I was never a huge fan of the Metroid Prime series (as Matt Casamassina passes out next to me without even reading this), as I'm more about the killing than I am about the scanning. Still, when I played it for Wii at E3 and then in New York, all that changed. Metroid is going to be amazing, and for all the diehard fans freaking out about the addition of more "shooter" elements into the mix, rest easy. You'll still have your scanning and exploration from what we're hearing. Now there's just more to kill along the way. All is well in the kingdom.
1) Super Mario Galaxy
Genre: Platformer
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Why?: I'm just going to say it and get it over with: Super Mario 64 was the last real Mario game. Screw the water hose, screw the Piantas, and screw Super Mario Sunshine. I want Mario, and it looks like I'm finally going to get it for the first time since September 26, 1996. Don't give me talking inanimate objects like a water gun, suitcase, or whatever the heck you think the franchise needs. Just stop. All I need is Mario, Bowser, a little bit of Yoshi, and Mr. Soccer-ball-head, and we can call it a day.
Other Games Worth Noting: This section of the Most Anticipated Titles could be longer than the actual list itself, but I'll keep it short, as there's no use rambling on about games we're all looking forward to. Still, the list of titles for 2007 on just Wii alone is already freaking huge, composed of such games as Super Paper Mario, Dragon Quest Swords, Forever Blue, Cooking Mama, Pokemon Battle Revolution (online Pocket Monsters), Project H.A.M.M.E.R., Disaster: Day of Crisis, Madden NFL 08, Medal of Honor Vanguard, Mario Party 8, and Resident Evil. Some of the games didn't make the list simply because I haven't seen enough of them, and others because Matt and I didn't want to sound like broken records on our lists. If this would have been a Top 20 list I'd still have no problem whipping it up, as there looks to be some amazing games on the way for Wii owners, and that doesn't begin to count the titles we don't know about yet. If games like Nintendogs, Electroplankton, Brain Age, and Wii Sports have taught me anything, it's that we've got no freaking clue what's in store for Wii until Nintendo is good and ready to tell us.
