Will buying prime upgrade allow me to use my own .com as my primary domain, rather than the x10host.com?

To answer the question, no. You must have an x10Hosting-provided subdomain as your primary, although you can use a private domain as a parked or add-on domain (and nobody but you need be any the wiser). You would need to upgrade to Premium (or to a VPS) to change your primary domain.

wow. So they have two options with the Prime and Illuminated and will take your money for those upgrades but won't let your primary name be your dot-com? Is that the whole selling point for the 3.95 premium service? Can't use your own domain unless you get 3 tiers up from free?

Even if I pay $60 for illuminated service, I still can't use my dot com as my primary? seriously?

Packages such as prime and illuminated are linked to free hosting. Those packages basically adds more resources to your free hosting account, meaning that things such as the primary domain name cannot be changed to the domain you desire (well, the only part you can request to change is the first part of the sub-domain). Yes, illuminated is on a separate server, but again, those packages are mostly resource upgrades.
Ideally, you would need to get paid hosting rather than paid-for-upgrades-on-top-of-free-hosting hosting. I don't know any free web host that would allow you to change the primary domain to whatever you want even if you pay for upgrades on top of a free hosting account.

@bdistler - I parked my domain originally and then had it as an addon, it was never the primary, nor was there an option to make it primary. Ever. Even as parked, the address always came up xxx.x10host.com.

Thanks caftpx10, I think to not offer the upgrade to use as primary without a weird convoluted set-up will be a negative for this business in the future. Even wordpress.com will let you map your own name as primary for $13 and they are the worst. Its a shame x10host really offered a great service for free but not having that option with seriously upping the 3.95 and up is just a turn off to this service, even though it was the best I found. Moving on.

They should offer that as its own upgrade, use your primary, $5, or something along those lines.

It's a damn shame, I just want my dot com as the primary. Happy with ever other part of the service. The fact that I had to start a thread to get that answer really annoys me too. AND, why would anyone give you a dollar and still be forced to use an x10host primary.... that's just nuts, in my opinion, though.

In the end, it turns me off to the premium service here, almost rather pay the same amount at GoDaddy. There's also no phone number that I can find easily to talk to someone.

x10Hosting used to allow setting the primary domain. It caused a lot of administrative overhead, as people either let their short-term domain purchases expire or used third-party subdomains (such as co.cc) that either vanished or had such massive abuse problems themselves that x10Hosting servers were blocked by IP address. The associated costs are too high to be supported gratis or by the quite small fees for Prime and Illuminated upgrades.

it should be an option for people to pay, not cut out completely. And illuminated at $1 a month should cover the one simple task of changing my primary. Gratis and Prime, I understand, but $1 a month is more than enough to redirect to my own domain. Thanks for the answers guys, I'll start researching new Hosting services again. Maybe I'll end up here at $3.95, but the whole draw to come here was that it was free at first and then cheaper @ .50 cents or $1, but for $3.95 a month and up, why stay here? GoDaddy answers my calls 24 hours a day and has 18 promo codes a minute. Really disappointed.

Hi freetvto,

Even as parked, the address always came up xxx.x10host.com.
This should not happen. A parked domain is exactly the same as a primary domain. It will display the same content, and the URL will not change. Your address should not come up as .x10host.com, as parked domains only mirror your primary domain. It is likely that some software, such as WordPress, has the incorrect site URL specified in the configuration.

This article may help in changing your site URL:

Thank you,

I have changed the general setting site address(url). it still comes up ---.x10host.com instead of my .com, so I'll wait a little while and see if it takes a while to take effect...

Hi freetvto,

I'm sorry; it appears the redirection was not due to the site URL, as I had originally thought. I took a look at your account, and it seems that you had "Redirection" enabled in the "Domains" section. I removed the redirection, and your site now appears to be loading fine. ;)

Thank you,

I had one more question, so now the .com is working correctly and that is great but when I go to the appearance>customize setting for my theme now, it says I am not logged into wordpress and brings up the login screen, after I log in, it logs me out again. Any idea how I can combat this? It must be related to the change of having the freetvtonight.com working since it started right after that came into effect. I've lost the customize feature for my theme for some reason... Would an upgrade help?

Your authentication cookie is tied to the domain that created it, so you'll need to log into WordPress again to create a session cookie that's associated with your domain. Basically, WordPress can't use your old session information is all (because it looks like it belongs to someone else).
