Definitely worth keeping in mind. But let ichwar and I play a little bit more with what we have, before we call in the techies. :)
yeah. have you posted your move yet fguy?

Suit yourself, but someone else might be able to save you a lot of head scratching!

I keep distracting him! You've been strangely silent & not provided any input to the suggestions.

Anyway, I've run out of thoughts for the moments, so I'm gonna leave you 2 to it.

I played 4.e3 a few hours ago.

Photobucket is a kludge. Let's stick with what we have for now. lets chat some more on Google

The diagram below is just a test

I could probably custom design a chess app for those interested to use. It might take about a week since it isn't a priority.

I wrote a chess game already intending to sell it on phones. It is mostly finished less two categories - pretty graphics and a chess engine. Obviously, for this particular use, no chess engine is required. If you all will forgive the crappy graphics (the GUI is good, but I was eventually going to make pretty pieces) then I could get this thing deployed. I've already created the game, rules, moves, save game, load game, blah, blah, blah

The feedback will probably motivate me to get it done quicker.

cool. I have one as well, it's at fchess.x10hosting.com. Right now it's just an applet that you can move the pieces around and a basic engine to play against the computer, but I want to expand the site to include some basic database functionality using php/mySQL, and also to allow people to log in and play "postal style" internet chess.

Are you familiar with the two main protocols for interfacing a GUI and an engine? (Winboard and UCI)

let's compare notes, perhaps we can collaborate on something.

Nice. I see a successful partnership forming!

I lost interest in trying to follow the game on this thread ages ago, when ichwar didn't seem to move for several days. Then the server move caused you upload problems & the board image disappeared. (You should have just hosted the image elsewhere like I suggested. Then you could have both shared 1 log-in and avoided X10's hosting problems!)

Is this game still on-going, or have you both given up now? If you continue with the game, might I suggest you each post something to the thread every time you make a move. That way, we can receive a Subscription Notification & will know that it's the turn of the next person.

Any way, good luck with the software development. It sounds like a good & fun challenge. :)

the game is still on, we're taking our time. Right now I suspect that ichwar is reaching the conclusion that he's already in trouble, and is deep in thought in a futile attempt to not lose material.

Our game is still ongoing, but I'm having trouble with waxman and am going to download a better gui sometime soon before I can take my next move.

Consider getting a Windows box to handle the more difficult challenges.

Do you have problems with 16-bit apps in general, or is this the only one you have?

:lol::lol::lol: Lol. :lol::lol::lol:

It's not ichwar's software that's the problem, it's his wetware!

zen-r you missed a couple. The problem is, a spellchecker won't help someone who is clueless about grammar and proper word forms.

Hehe.

I saw the "say" word, but thought it would confuse the issue if I highlighted it next to the "their" word. As for "isn't" - that looks OK to me.

I'm only doing this because ichwar refuses to remove the quotes from his sig - even though it's you that's been getting him! And his sig appears in other parts of the forum as well, not just the games section where we get the joke. Not nice.

Yeah, it isn't clear, it depends what you replace "their" with.

Here are two correct forms...

1. I guess someone who says they're smart but really aren't.
2. I guess someone who says he is smart, but really isn't.

2. is probably better than one, but I think both are acceptable grammatically.

they're and isn't don't go together, no matter what you do with say or says.

You have a good point.

If I used "1.", then personally I'd add a word for clarity ;

1. I guess someone who says they're smart, but really they aren't.

Off-topic, but who cares!

Awaiting ichwar's next chess move (or resignation :naughty:)...........

The good news is several years ago I programmed in Java ...

but I want to expand the site to include some basic database functionality using php/mySQL

Can't help you there ...

I'm slightly familiar since I just took a glance at the wikipedia entry for Winboard/Xboard. ;) I did my chess game on my own without any shared libraries. It's in C++ currently. I'll make a page to share it soon.

OK, then you probably realize that it depends what you want to do. The standard interface is not so much a bunch of shared libraries, but a protocol, a system of text commands, sent by standard i/o streams, that just about every engine or GUI on the market works with. So for example if you wanted to you could interface your GUI with any commercially available chess engine, or your future engine with any high quality GUI. It would not matter what language they were written in.

Just a general question:

Will you guys be producing a full blow X10Hosting chess tournament or is this thread the extent of it?

Right now we don't have the technology in place to do it on x10, but we're working on it. Maybe it is doable, maybe it isn't. There is a chess thread in Forum Games also.

Ah I see. I would have loved to see a chess tourney on X10. Good luck none the less, I'll go back to lurking in this thread.

Gotcha. That's useful and I'll probably need to change my program to match that protocol to avoid writing my own engine. I'll look at it more as I get back into this.

(As an aside, I really wanted to write my own engine but I know that even if I do a really good job it's still not going to be on par with existing engines. So I put it on hold rather than "waste" a lot on time on an engine that might never get used. I do have a random mover engine for testing purposes but that's it.)

Speaking for myself, a tournament style feature was definitely something I was considering if I pushed the chess game forward. It is an existing feature on Fritz chess. The only time I used it on Fritz chess was to match different engines against each other and let it run overnight to see which engines were stronger over hundreds of games.

So yeah, I would consider adding it but I'm not going to make any promises. We'll see ...
