I have really been considering upgrading to the premium service offered by x10premium. I noticed, similar to every other paid host on the net, that you guys offer the good 'ol "99.9% uptime promise and lighting fast server speed and load time".

I have seen a few other people here asking how this is possible considering your free servers crawl in speed and are ridden with issues (my current site is hosted on cossacks). You guys continually respond saying that this is because of two things: 1. there are many, many fewer accounts on each sever and 2. abuse is greatly reduced as well.

My question is: are these two things what really allow you guys to promise these things on your premium services, or are there other factors as well that allow you to offer competitive server speed and reliability?

Thanks!

It is really those two factors that are most important. The radically lower account density on the paid servers mean that cPanel and its associated services are not constantly choking under the load of thousands of users, as we see all too often on the free servers. As for abusers, almost no abusers will use the paid service for the simple fact that they would have to spend money on it; most spammers likely have many sites across multiple free hosts, which means they can get the same thing done without any outlay.

Free hosting can never be equally compared to paid hosting for a number of reasons, the two you mentioned included.

Corey did in one post a while back mention that a lot of the downtime on free are due to the fact apache needs to be restarted rather often, mainly due to the number of users doing changes to their domain settings (each new domain added has to be configured to point to the right folder), but also each time a new account is created. This combined with a large config file to load each time does unfortunately cause noticeable downtime. These are things we currently are working on a solution for, to allow changes to happen without restarting apache each time, this work has unfortunately also added some to the downtime.

Those things does apply to the apache on paid as well, but the users there are less prone to switch domains, often they have their own TLD, plus there's not as many accounts created each day. The few restarts that has to be done goes by unnoticed, the sites never go down as apache restarts instantly.

Another reason is cPanel is better designed for the premium service with fewer accounts on each server, we've had a couple run ins with cPanel and the number of accounts on the free servers. A lot of it has been sorted with custom solutions which has taken some time and testing to achieve.

All your guys' feedback is great! Thanks!

I had no idea that accounts a lone cause so many problems.

Commenting to the above post: you have actually used the x10 premium hosting?

I used premium as well for a while before becoming part of the staff, only issues I ever had was all caused by me doing something stupid :)

Same here - most of the downtime I've had was caused by me. There was a 20 minute downtime at one point for an update that was installed, but 99.9% allows x10 something like 40 minutes total downtime monthly, and that's about the only downtime I can remember in the 2 years I've used paid XD

Ya and the vps's are even better because all x10 has to manage is the kernel and networking. I haven't had more than 5-10 mins downtime so far which is a long time of using their service. The free issues are simply related to 5,000+ accounts per server. Cpanel isnt designed to handle anywhere near that and x10 cant make enough money to split the servers up enough to fix the problem so they have to find other, cheaper solutions.

Thanks guys! I think im going to take the plunge.

Once I have registered and paid and all that, you guys can transfer everything over? I think I remember reading that as well.

yes, all you need to do is request the transfer through the ticket system in your clients area, we will then move the account over, including your settings and e-mail accounts.

Don't forget to include information about your free account, such as cPanel user name and server.
