If Apache can't gzip, I believe that PHP can. You might want to look into implementing gzip compression from the php perspective. In the meantime you might want to take a look at http://corz.org/serv/tricks/htaccess2.php or many other toturials on mod_rewrite that you can find on google.

The problem lies with the file extensions. Linux is a CaSe-SeNsItIvE operating system. Therefore, doomdoor1.png and doomdoor1.PNG are not the same files. A simple advice, always use lowercase characters when dealing with anything web-related or that could possibly be sent to a Linux computer.

I currently use that technique: my main domain is an x10 subdomain and my real website is a co.cc domain. However, keep in mind that things such as FTP users use the main domain, not parked domains.
