A PHP login script is what I normally use. You just needto add a line of code to the top of every page you want to protect. I suggest having a look at vAuthenticate and vSignup both of which can be found here.

The Staff forums are hidden, so that only staff can see them. We wouldn't want just any old member looking at what goes on behind the scenes.

I think the confusion is with the fact that you have to register on the Forums first, an it doesn't create a Forum account for you. I think people sometimes get confused about which account is which (They don't always have the same username for both). Anyway, with the new site I think I saw...

Defec, because the files for the API are written in PHP we can't just download them. They either need to be renamed, or put into a .zip archive.
