    Cracking Down on Spam

It's been a while since I used PHP (I haven't actually had a webhosting account for a few months now because I didn't use my account much in the first place), but hopefully someone can comment on whether this is feasible: If you're afraid you're going to go over the 100 mail limit, override the...

Uhhhh, Beryl/Compiz/Compiz-Fusion was out years before Vista was released. Well, I'm using Compiz on my Arch Linux laptop with crappy ATI Radeon XPress 200M integrated graphics, so I don't see the compatibility issue much anymore. Red Hat is primarily a business server distro, and you'll find...

/me changes to his Linux user hat... And yet the general industry concensus is that most Microsoft APIs are pure misery to write code for, and thus there are all sorts of layered abstractions to keep the poor programmer away from them. I don't doubt that it's possible to have Compiz-like...

    Did IRC Just Go Down?

By the time I finish typing this, it'll probably be back up, but did the IRC server just go down? I was disconnected and now my connections are timing out. I'm just wondering whether it's actually down or Comcast is just being dumb.

    Windos 7 (NTFS vs WFS)

Uhhhh, yes it is. Secure logins must be used to block the script kiddies, but aside from that, we have no major security problems whatsoever, and we definitely have no viruses. All the Linux antivirus apps exist to scan for Windows viruses, and they are frequently used in Linux mail servers. See...

The other nice thing about Arch is the Arch Build System (abs). It lets you download the scripts the developers used to make the packages in the repositories. From there, you can edit them and rebuild them and do whatever else you want. Personally, I've built my own kernel on a few occasions. a...

!!!! The NEW Biggest thread !!!!

Ergh, I had an actual point with that post, I was just running out the door as I wrote it. The car I drive was built in 1984, but in Texas, the insurance company gets to assign me as the primary driver of the newest car my family owns, so the insurance rates are something huge. I don't remember...

Except that unless global maintenance is in process, issues are generally server-specific. While you may have been correct, this is generally not the case. The servers are identical and managed identically unless one server is used to test something. The servers also pretty much always have...

    Alt SMTP Port?

You can most likely use the Comcast SMTP servers, actually. You can send mail with the from address set to your x10Hosting account, and Comcast will send it for you as long as the from address can be traced back to an actual server. This is what lhyman has already said, but I have Comcast, and...

Elesarr: That's irrelevant because it's from a different server. You'll find that the load is always quite high on these servers. Everyone Else: Yes, I would wait until tomorrow and then open a ticket if it's still not working. It's probably just server maintenance/updates.

    Slow Server

This is probably just maintenance being done on one of the servers. Long load times aren't normal at all, and there's definitely nothing wrong with SMF. It'll probably be all better tomorrow. Until it's over, you should probably develop your scripts on your local computers.

I get to go under my car this evening and put some bushings on the automatic transmission shifter rod so it'll shift without clicking and without me having to move the shifter past the gear I want and back. I also get to install a new transmission mount and new sway bar links and hope that stops...

It's claim to fame is that there are no releases. You just have pacman (the package manager) update your system and you get the latest stable version of pretty much every app installed. Our current kernel version is 2.6.30.4, to show you what I mean. There is somewhat of a penalty to stability...

I'm running Arch Linux, but because of the way Arch packages things, it's very rare to find an Arch-specific problem. Unlike the Debian/Ubuntu people, we don't patch things before we package them, so bugs are generally upstream problems.

No, and the only thing I can think of that's odd is that I have both a PS/2 and a USB keyboard connected right now. I was literally typing "wrwrwrwr" and watching the light turn on and off. Oh, and I had to write this post twice because X (and my entire desktop) crashed and restarted to a login...

The spiel I normally give to the "Everyone Should Use Linux" people is that Linux isn't for everyone because it isn't as user friendly. When something breaks, it's seriously broken, and because a linux desktop environment is built on several hundred components, you need to have a good idea of...

Same here, although I would like to say in Linux's defense that most of our users aren't like ichwar. Linux is a solid OS that's useful for many things, but it's not for everyone. And ichwar, you need to figure out that Ubuntu != Linux. It's been 5 years since I touched apt-get, and I'm quite...

    Linux Users Unite!

On Arch, the packages are xf86-video-ati and xf86-video-radeonhd. There are actually three drivers for XOrg, radeon, radeonhd, and ati (ati is just a wrapper that loads whichever driver is appropriate). The equivalent Ubuntu packages are... xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd...

how do you run .exe files

Dedicated servers don't do any rendering at all, actually. Some RPG style games that can be played multiplayer would probably run, but any modern FPS would choke and die. Even older games like Quake 3 derivatives would have trouble.
