Maya is for animations. It's for making films like Ice Age or Kung Fu Panda.

3Ds Max is for modeling. It's great for making games and realistic 3D environments.

As you can see they are two different programs for two different purposes. By the way they are both products of Autodesk. This confirms the previous statement.

Well i think that they are both exactly the same.

A employee from a gaming company made a YouTube account and he was always using 3ds max to make his graphics. I think its just preferance which one you like.

Maya is by far the better app, but mainly because it's suited for more high-end organic models for animation and thus they "look better." 3ds Max is much better for low-poly models, say for computer games, so each has its use. The UI in 3ds Max is a bit more traditional, but once you figure out Maya's, it seems more natural.

That being said, I'm still a fan of Blender. The fact that it can have practically every feature of the big boys at a fraction (read: zero) of the cost still astounds me.

Maya is mainly used for Movies and Video Production.
3Ds Max is mainly used for Gaming and Level Production.

Techniccally both can do the basic same things, but each has its own niche.

So if you want to make a high quality movie like The Hulk or Transformers, go with Maya.
If you want a cheaper alternative that can do about the same things but easier to use, go with 3Ds
If you want a completely free modeler go with Gmax.

In the end you can go to awesome heights with any of the two.

"It is not the tool that limits the possibilities, but the Artist." Your skills as an Artist will decide how good your productions are, not the program you use.

As a side note; Gmax and 3ds Max are used to map for Halo PC and other games.

Edit: Gmax is alot easier to use and understand then Blender, I suggest you get Gmax if you want to go freeware.

Film productions use more maya because is easier and better to program shaders, etc in it.

OMFG look at what I have found on Google:

Autodesk 3ds Max Design 2009 - PC - DVD-ROM from Autodesk
$3,533.79
Autodesk Maya Unlimited 2009 - Mac, PC, Unix from Autodesk
$6,230.00

Anyone else here say holy crap? At those prices EVERYONE should go with the freeware... and I thought Adobe was expensive...

After seeing that I find that the only "legal" way for you to get one of the two programs is to go with 3Ds Max's counterpart GMAX.

Edit: I really do not understand those prices, I know they are good products but you could by 4 computers with that cash.

Proffesional software is always exepnsive.

I get maya free because I go to 3D school
