So we're having this big debate thing at my school for a world societies class. I'm not sure wich side I'm on yet, but I'm heading towards evolution. I'll keep you updated on what i've got going...if we evolved from apes, then how come apes are still here? The 40 foot long crocodiles and other ancient reptiles that evolved into crocs and aligators are gone...the large birds that were half mammals are gone...how come apes aren't gone?

(this is a major project so give me some meaty info!)

Once again, I'm with you on this one too ;D

I believe in God and all, but I also beleive in Darwin. Darwin has more proof over God, sorry dude, but Darwin is beating u right now :-\

Creationism.

My parents are kind of religous freaks, but thats okay. I still believe in creationism. There is a supernatural force out there and no one will ever know for sure what it is until they actually meet thier maker. I cant wait.

Well to me, there are more FACTS pointing to evolution. Sure there are missing parts where there is some guessing going on.

Creationism is just a story that we are suposta believe??? I don't think so...

Well, just the statement "humans evolved from apes" is rather incorrect.

Darwin's theory of evolution states that humans and monkeys came from a common ancestor.. if this thing had a drawing pad I would be able to illustrate.

Way back a long time ago, there was a species similar to a combination of human and what is now known as an ape. Over time, that species split into two branches; one branch being humans, and the other branch being monkeys. The same event occurs in many fish populations; a single species will split into two different species that will be unable to mate with each other.

And for those who deny evolution entirely are wrong; after all, evolution does mean change.. and we do have scientific proof that our appendixes have grown smaller since our body no longer requires it's function (we don't eat raw meat like our primitive ancestors did way back when).

Science > Religion for me

I just recently watched a debate about this at my school, lol.

My parents are very religious, but i have to say, the evidence supporting creationism is very slim. Fundamentalists (creationists) mainkly back themselves up with something called Irreducible Complexity, which states that nature is so extremely complex that it couldn't have possibly risen from nature, but instead, a higher being created it. I kind of always chuckle at this, because its basically stating that since we cannot understand how nature could have risen from natural processes, then god must have created it.

However, there was a scientist by the name of Hoyle who calculated the odds of the components of DNA coming together needed to form the first life form, and found the odds to be 10^40,000 to 1. Just a little something to support the creationists of x10 ;)

Aren't they the same? Like I say, whats the "thing" called to have new multi-core processor? Creation or evolution. If you say it was creation, and isn't it an evolution from old single core? If you say evolution, isn't it a new creation from AMD, if not. Intel will still developing old Pentium 4 with higher frequency and higher heat.

that's the #1 thing that people get wrong about Darwins evolution model.

There are actually 3 main points, not 2. There's
1) creationism (belief that god, and only god managed and created the world)
2) evolution (belief that adaptation and mutation lead to formation of organisms, etc)
3) can't remember the name for this one (belief that the world was formed, and that some supernatural force started evolution). It's basically the middle ground between creationism and evolution - for those that are agnostic I guess.

I believe in evolution, but I don't think that you can take science as the end all, be all - there are things that science can't explain, but those are things that we just will never be able to comprehend (and no it has nothing to do with god or any other holy or religious force, it's just something that no ogranism will ever be capable of understanding).

all i can say about the reasons Creationism is not supported in facts, is because it's all based on faith, you have to believe in God and that everything exists, you can't just say we evolved from apes...even if we did, who did they evolve from, and who did the people that apes evolve from evolve from? it's just common sense...creationism is the answer

AGH! Why are we even having this argument? Evolution by natural selection is already supported by facts. And what do the creationists have? The bible, which is essentially a series of historic, dated pieces of literature. Nothing more.

I hate to say the bible is like that, but that's what it is.

But it's pretty much proven we evolved from apes! Also, everything evolved from small little bacteria. Natural selection molded everything. From the Encyclopaedia Britannica:

The 19th-century English naturalist Charles Darwin argued that organisms come about by evolution, and he provided a scientific explanation, essentially correct but incomplete, of how evolution occurs and why it is that organisms have features—such as wings, eyes, and kidneys—clearly structured to serve specific functions. Natural selection was the fundamental concept in his explanation. Natural selection occurs because individuals having more-useful traits, such as more-acute vision or swifter legs, survive better and produce more progeny than individuals with less-favourable traits. Genetics, a science born in the 20th century, reveals in detail how natural selection works and led to the development of the modern theory of evolution. Beginning in the 1960s, a related scientific discipline, molecular biology, enormously advanced knowledge of biological evolution and made it possible to investigate detailed problems that had seemed completely out of reach only a short time previously—for example, how similar the genes of humans and chimpanzees might be (they differ in about 1–2 percent of the units that make up the genes).

Another source, Wikipedia, which has a 96k article on Evolution (but of course, this is all free):
The transmutation of species was accepted by many scientists before 1859, but Charles Darwin's On The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection provided the first convincing exposition of a mechanism by which evolutionary change could occur: natural selection. After many years of working in private on his theory, Darwin was motivated to publish his work on evolution when he received a letter from Alfred Russel Wallace in which Wallace revealed his own, independent discovery of natural selection. Accordingly, Wallace is sometimes given shared credit for originating the theory.
Although the evidence is incomplete, it's proven.

Almost complete; it's pretty pathetic that some people go to the extent that fossils are "works of the devil to confuse man". People are pretty ignorant nowadays; I agree with you 100% cube

Agreed. And why desn't God just be the leet admin and be like:

[Satan has signed on]
[Satan has broken TOS]
God: STFU Foo!
[Satan has been banned from the server]

Why not just that? I mean, he COULD do that, couldn't He?

Incredibly well put again
What I don't get though is how women expose so much of thier bodies without feeling exposed. If my shorts are above my knees (the end of them I mean, I wear the tops at my waist ) I feel like I'm showing too much. It just feels...weird..

If nothing comes suddenly then it has to have come slowly or not come at all. If it came slowly, that was Evolution. That sort of contradicts your own statement, but I dunno.
