its true, bit of an open ended question! try and re-word it a little to give a little more info on what you want - remember rpg's and rts's and other types of game are fairly different!

there was a program i read about in a GI issue last year not exactly sure of the name anymore but it allowed you to make your own game.

You could always learn C++ and make a game but then you would need to make graphics and if necessary, 3D models.

I use Flash to make games for fun.

There is a lot of free opensource 3D Graphics engine u can use like Irrlicht (irrlicht.sourceforge.net) or Ogre3D (www.ogre3d.org/).

gamemaker is the best!!! (for 2D) For 3D it gets more complicated...
