There have been some issues with MySQL today so the Access Denied errors along with the over count of databases may be perhaps all related. See if phpMyAdmin shows your databases and if you have any issues installing phpBB again.

Are you sure you are using the correct Database user? That would be an access denied error, meaning bad credentials are being supplied which does not allow access to the database you're looking for.

Are you sure MySQL wasn't down at the time you checked your databases? If there's an issue with MySQL you won't see the databases under your account until it returns.
