Here are some reasons PEOPLE think that the world is going to end....

[FONT=verdana, tahoma, arial, helvetica]Scientific experts from around the world are genuinely predicting that five years from now, all life on Earth could well finish. Some are saying it'll be humans that set it off. Others believe that a natural phenomenon will be the cause. And the religious folks are saying it'll be God himself who presses the stop button...

1. Mayan Calendar

mayan.jpg

The first mob to predict 2012 as the end of the world were the Mayans, a bloodthirsty race that were good at two things:

Building highly accurate astrological equipment out of stone and
Sacrificing Virgins.

Thousands of years ago they managed to calculate the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days, only 34 seconds out. The Mayan calendar predicts that the Earth will end on December 21, 2012. Given that they were pretty close to the mark with the lunar cycle, it's likely they've got the end of the world right as well.

2. Sun Storms

solar_storm.jpg

Solar experts from around the world monitoring the sun have made a startling discovery: our sun is in a bit of strife. The energy output of the sun is, like most things in nature, cyclic, and it's supposed to be in the middle of a period of relative stability. However, recent solar storms have been bombarding the Earth with so much radiation energy, it's been knocking out power grids and destroying satellites. This activity is predicted to get worse, and calculations suggest it'll reach its deadly peak sometime in 2012

3. The Atom Smasher

Scientists in Europe have been building the world's largest particle accelerator. Basically its a 27km tunnel designed to smash atoms together to find out what makes the Universe tick. However, the mega-gadget has caused serious concern, with some scientists suggesting that it's properly even a bad idea to turn it on in the first place. They're predicting all manner of deadly results, including mini black holes. So when this machine is fired up for its first serious experiment in 2012, the world could be crushed into a super-dense blob the size of a basketball.

4. Super Volcano

sthelenaex.jpg

Yellowstone National Park in the United States is famous for its thermal springs and Old Faithful geyser. The reason for this is simple - it's sitting on top of the world's biggest volcano, and geological experts are beginning to get nervous sweats. The Yellowstone volcano has a pattern of erupting every 650,000 years or so, and we're many years overdue for an explosion that will fill the atmosphere with ash, blocking the sun and plunging the Earth into a frozen winter that could last up to 15,000 years. The pressure under the Yellowstone is building steadily, and geologists have set 2012 as a likely date for the big bang.

5. The Physicists

This one's case of bog-simple maths mathematics. Physicists at Berekely Uni have been crunching the numbers. and they've determined that the Earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event. Even worse, they're claiming their calculations prove, that we're all going to die, very soon - while also saying their prediction comes with a certainty of 99 percent- and 2012 just happens to be the best guess as to when it occurs.

6. Slip-Slop-Slap-BANG!

We all know the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that sheilds us from most of the sun's radiation. What you might not know is that the magnetic poles we call north and south have a nasty habit of swapping places every 750,000 years or so - and right now we're about 30,000 years overdue. Scientists have noted that the poles are drifting apart roughly 20-30kms each year, much faster than ever before, which points to a pole-shift being right around the corner. While the pole shift is underway, the magnetic field is disrupted and will eventually disappear, sometimes for up to 100 years. The result is enough UV outdoors to crisp your skin in seconds, killing everything it touches.

I personally don't think this is going to end; just one of those 6/6/06 things!

As a Christian my answer is simply I don't know.
If God decides to end the world it'll end. If He decides not to it wont.

Chances are that all of those predictions are false. Think of all the predictions we've had about the end of the world. And how many of them have occurred?

Noooo.

Nothing gona happend, but the Mayan predictions are very interesting, because are based on mathematical calculations.

On December 21, 2012, Santa Claus will get sick and won't be able to deliver our presents on Christmas Eve. Someone else will have to do the job.

All of the facts you presented are seriously some pretty scary stuff. I'm hoping for a fact that the world isn't going to come for an end, as I'm probably going to have some nightmeres about this considering it's 2AM in the morning and I haven't gotten sleep yet.

The large hadron collider built in Bern, switzerland? It was started in june and they gonna do it in like september.

MiniBlack Holes, isnt that the point? to see what happens if we hit something really small into somthing really hard. This reminds of those time-travel things with another super colider, that were gonna rip a hole in the space-time continum. Scientists are always predicting doom and gloom, thats how they get there funding, just look at "global warming" a scientist says that the worlds gonna die because of the amount of CO2 we are putting into the atmospeere and causes a global phenomenon, yet the amount of CO2 we produce is insignificant compared to that amount released by volcanos each year. This seems like just another way of scientist trying to steal eachothers funding.

Ack. Live everyday like it was your last.
I really don't want to believe it though.

I don't either think something gonna happen, but I wonder what crazy scientists would decide to start using a atom smasher in 2012 when everyone will be freaked out all ready.

they already started it. The real experiment takes place 21th october this year, 2008.

I go along with chris, yet I do think god can give a gift of warning of the future. I mean, he is god right? But anyways, I had a weird occurrence that happened to me when i was 12 and I prayed to god asking when the world would end for no apparent reason, and in the mirror little scratches seemed to look like 2012, so yeah.

I agree. I am actually pretty frightened. While 1 and 5 (I want to see your math!) don't scare me very much. I think number 3 is just idiotic, I mean, who cares about learning what the result of smashing an atom is if it will disrupt the universe in the process? I think those scientists should put a halt to their little "experiment". I'm not sure 4 really scares me either, since the world has survived volcanoes before.

Hmm.,, if this is the matter i have a answer that supports the topic starters point:
Mayan's calender ends exactly at 2012[end]/2013[beginning], and our real calender is 20% based on Mayan calender.

It is being said that our ancestors [Pre-Man]/Old age people had an ability to detect timings and other astro-related aspects depending upon the sky and other things.

Most of the calenders that our calenders that we follow in real life end at the same/exact time and time day as Mayan does, so probably this can a just basis that our scientists are predicting;).

And yes " Global Warming " is in real and is happening due to the increase in CO2 [Carbon] and its components that are are elevated by us/humans into the sky. Glaciers are melting, rain is blasting as storms, and its is also said that humidity under earth is being built and might explode at anytime.

Anyways, lets see what will happen and we all shall wish that "What ever it happens will happen for good".

Even if something does happen, as long as it happens quickly then I suppose we won't know.
