Hi, sorry if this is a stupid question, but i'm new to all of this. I'm using dreamweaver to make my site and when i try to upload it it, i get a message saying, 'An FTP error has occurred, cannot make connection to host.'

Any ideas as to why this is? I'm pretty sure i'm putting in the right info, i created a FTP account and in the control panel and i'm just copy and pasting the server name from there.

I'm using Dreamweaver CS4 if that makes any difference.

You need to set the nameservers of your domain to:
ns1.x10hosting.com
ns2.x10hosting.com

before you can use FTP

All settings, such as changing name servers, for the domain would be done through the registrar.
You should have some sort of control panel with thm where you can configure the domain.

Thank you. I've done this, but I'm still getting the same error message on DW. Is there anything else it could be?

changes to dns, can take up to 48 hours to fully update.

you could try using starka.x10hosting.com as host (starka being your servers name)

BTW, it says

On my account at least, cpanel only lists x10hosting domains for ftp access, so I don't think DNS is the problem here, since an x10 domain will probably be being used.

BTW, are you using the correct username? Try using your cpanel username and password to log into ftp. Any users created in cpanel will have yourUsername_ prepended to the username you add there.

In this case dns is a factor since he does not use an x10hosting related sub domain, he has his own paid domain as main domain.

I just checked and the user name does not get prefixed, though it would be something like: name@domain.com

He has no x10 sub as he has his own domain. If the domain isn't pointed at x10, FTP wont work

But it specifically states.
copy and pasting the server name from there
The server name given in cpanel is the x10 server name. I have my own domain, set up as the main domain, and I still have the x10 server domain listed for ftp. If he copied the domain then it will be the x10 domain, not his own domain.
I quote the cpanel page:
FTP Accounts allow you to access your web site's files through a protocol called FTP. You will need a third party FTP program to access your files. You can login to a FTP by entering ajrhunt.x10hosting.com as your FTP host and the username and password of the account you wish to log into.
Here my X10 subdomain is listed, so I doubt it will list main domain for anyone else.

With the usernames, I was slightly misled by the presence of username_logs user, they are usually in the form Random@sub.x10hosting.com, however your cpanel name also works.

Have you checked if dreamweaver is using passive mode or multiple connections, enable passive mode, disable multiple connections.

Thanks everyone for your help. I've got it working now. I think it just had to update the change of dns server.

Thanks!
