I am running Avast and it hasn't hinder the performance of my PC at all. It is a free anti-virus that was recommended in one of the PC mags.

O.K. y'all like I said and it seems like no one is listening...
all the new virus' disable the anti virus engine...
evary single one of them
can you hear me HELLO....
anti virus' are in our day and age 100%
useless

maybe against some super basic virus O.K.
but the new ones forget it...

anyway I found this site that scans any suspect file on your computer
with all the anti-virus' on the market....

Code:
http://www.virustotal.com/

a single file being scanned by like 25 different anti-virus' not bad huh?

I have both antivir and avast and they dont consume much. I can play cod4, listen to music and defrag all at the same time with both antivir and avast without slowing my comp down.

I had problems with AVG in the past.... AVG started screwing up and tried to delete a lot of files that weren't even viruses. So i don't use AVG anymore

I've test driven all of the GOOD AV programs over the years and Avast beats them all. Get Avast and Mcafee Security Center (not Mcafee AV) going together and you've got a winning combination.

No AV will detect everything, but Avast comes close.

kaspersky is the best ever choice...
it's not as heavy as norton antivirus or mcafee
try other antivirus first before you try kaspersky..and see the difference....

It's a good thing you don't need anti-virus for Mac, i've had mine for over 5 years now and have never got a virus :).

i use avast 4 and avg 8 at the same time, i used to just use avg 7...
i'm thinking of dumping avg as it is a big resource hog, when it does it's scheduled scan at 11pm it takes up 50% of the CPU, a whole core on my dual-core cpu... avast never uses more than 15% when it's doing its scan, which is only at night and early morning. starts at midnight, ends at about six or seven

Personally, I don't use one, I just do an online scan from time to time to find nothing. ;-) But, on computers where I'm not the only user, I used to install AVG Free 7.5. The problem is that it's discontinued and AVG Free 8.0 is a real resource hog.

I tried avast! with the basic minimumm scanners, following recommendations from topics about anti-virus comparisons, since it's apparently a resource hog otherwise. I also heard that it doesn't remove viruses extremely well, but that it was caused by older versions not having the on-access scanner running by default.

The next I tried is AntiVir. It's quite light (doesn't take 45 seconds to boot unlike AVG 8) and apparently is one of the AVs that finds the most viruses, but there are two big disadvantages with the free version : The update servers are so slow it takes minutes to download a 100kB file from them, and there are popups showing up while it's updating.

I read in a few places on the subject, and avast! with a minimum of options enabled (just the standard AV scanner) and AntiVir are good choices.

There is one last and very good choice, but only if you don't need to use the "Switch User" feature : Comodo Anti-Virus. It's free, updates are automatic and fast, it doesn't slow down the computer and does e-mail scanning. I'd recommend disabling the Application Control features, as it asks you if you want to allow or disallow every EXE, SYS, etc. from executing. It's quite annoying as every times you update an application, it asks you again, and again,... I read an anti-virus review once, and Comodo AV was the only one that "does everything well".

I too dis-activated my AV a long time ago...
why.. how could you... OMG...
well I never open a suspicious email...
if I download a file I scan it with the free online
AV scanner @ virustotal com which is a service that
scans your file with ALL the most known AV on the market...

as I said before, the virus' that ru mafia is injecting
into our computers these days... when activated simply
dis-activate the AV engine... duh

and just for fun... alter some important system files...

my advise scan files @ virustotal com
delete suspicious emails
and don't surf weird porno sites etc "just go directly to youporn (it's free)"...
this is the ru mafias's playground for malicious php injections..etc...

I use McAffe. I love McAffe because somehow I got a unlimited free subscription for buying my computer. It's wonderful. (And 5 years worth of updates!)

Anything other than Norton / McAffee, they are both AWFUL. They detect nothing, leave you wide open, and drive you mental. McAffee used to update through Internet Exlorer too, leaving it wide open to attacks through a badly written browser. I recommend AVG Internet Security, it's relatively cheap and very strong.

The worst antivirus software (and reasons) I think are:
• Norton -- HUGE memory hog
• Ewido -- Older AVG
• AVG -- Too busy detecting piracy rather than viruses
• Avast! -- Good price, horrid detection
• McAfee -- Crazy. It's on most of the computers you buy at stores!
• Norman -- Too popular to be good
All the above are VERY common, but they are the worst. The list is longer, but I don't want to bother. Stay away from Pre-Installed antivirus solutions in your computer.

The best antivirus software (and reasons) I think are:
• Kaspersky -- Very smart, blocks suspicious, best antivirus!
• ESET NOD -- Very fast and accurate
• Sophos -- Great detection rate
• F-Secure -- Strong protection
• BitDefender -- Almost equals Kaspersky
• Ikarus -- Great detection rate
