I use .co.cc for both of my websites, and so far I've not had any problems, they were easy and quick to setup, and the management panel looks well laid out. The only problem with their service is that not every name is free.

I use the Portable Apps software on my U3 USB drive. I've found that "Allway Sync 'n' Go" is a very useful file sync tool. It isn't listed on the Portable Apps website so I thought I'd post the link here. There is also Blender Portable which isn't listed but is available here. Portable Freeware...

If you have access to a package manager you should just be able to search for "FTP client". You'll then be presented with a list of all the available ones, and you can choose to have one installed.
